Wellen’s Competitive Analysis
Conducting in-depth app analysis to identify opportunities for enhancing Wellen’s platform
Wellen is a wellness startup that designs workout programs specifically for women with osteopenia and osteoporosis. During my internship, I was tasked with conducting a competitive analysis of leading fitness and wellness platforms. The goal was to explore onboarding flows, site interactions, and key features across the industry to find ways Wellen could elevate its own user experience.

PROBLEM
What problem am I trying to solve?
While Wellen already had several helpful features in place, there were still untapped opportunities to increase engagement, trust, and usability.
Questions I asked:
What are competitors doing well that Wellen could learn from?
How do they structure onboarding, highlight benefits, and build community?
What friction points or missed opportunities do they have that Wellen should avoid?

PROBLEM STATEMENT
“As a woman managing osteopenia, I find it frustrating when fitness apps don’t offer tailored programs or clear guidance for my condition, making it hard to stay motivated and confident in my workouts.”
REDESIGN GOALS
To focus my work and add intention
1
Create a clear, comprehensive, and easily scannable layout
Mapped experiences of various apps to allow for quick pattern recognition and idea sharing.
2
Identify key UX strategies from competitors
Documented onboarding flows, interactive features, and content organization styles that work well—or don’t.
3
Inspire actionable ideas for Wellen’s product team
Presented learnings in a collaborative FigJam board for ongoing reference.
DESIGN PROCESS
Research & Organization
Started with a set of competitor platforms provided by the team, then expanded my scope by researching additional apps in two main categories:
Fitness (workout tracking, personalized programs)
Wellness (habit forming, mindfulness, community-based)
Sourced competitors from articles, app stores, and market reports to ensure I had a well-rounded list.
Gathering Insights
Took screenshots of onboarding flows and key pages
Traced clickable paths and user journeys with labeled arrows
Explored every interaction—from pop-ups to hover states
Highlighted standout UX features and weak points
Used sticky notes to leave clear, concise feedback next to visuals
Each app’s journey was mapped like a storyboard—button to screen to action—so the Wellen team could follow user paths at a glance.
RESULTS
The final FigJam board gave the team an intuitive, visual resource filled with actionable insights.
✅ The CEO and designers said they referred back to my board even after my internship ended.
✅ It helped Wellen benchmark their UX against major competitors.
✅ It sparked internal discussions around onboarding improvements and feature opportunities.

TAKEAWAYS
Things that I learned
This project sharpened my skills in UX competitive analysis and visual storytelling. I learned how to distill complex user flows into clear, actionable insights and present research in a format that empowers product teams to ideate quickly.
Next Steps
If I continued on the project, I’d suggest conducting user interviews to validate our assumptions and mapping those findings to specific product recommendations for onboarding and engagement strategies.
